    About Scrap Value Calculator

The Scrap Value Calculator gives jewelers a fast, consistent way to estimate melt value and buy price for gold items using live per-gram pricing, metal purity, and weight—while keeping the math transparent for both staff and customers.

    1) Simple inputs, immediate output

On the left panel, the jeweler selects:

    • Metal Type (karat + purity shown right in the dropdown, e.g., 14K (58.5% pure))
    • Weight (grams) (direct numeric entry)
    • Buy Price Markdown (slider that sets how far below spot the shop pays)

As soon as inputs are entered, the calculator produces an Estimated Scrap Value card with a bold dollar amount—designed to work like a counter-quote tool: quick, legible, and hard to misread.

    2) Built-in "buy price below spot" control (the slider matters)

The Buy Price Markdown slider is the main business control:

    • At 0%, the estimate reflects the pure melt value based on spot pricing and purity.
    • At 20% (example shown), the tool automatically reduces the final payout and shows the impact clearly—no manual calculator work, no "back of napkin" errors.

This is what makes it usable in real shops: it's not just a melt calculator, it's a buy-back estimator that matches how jewelers actually price scrap.

    3) Transparent formula + purity reference (prevents disputes)

On the right panel, the calculator spells out the exact formula:

Purity × Current Price × Weight

Below that, it displays a quick purity percentage reference for common karats (10K, 14K, 18K, 22K). This reduces confusion and helps staff explain pricing confidently when customers ask "how did you get that number?"

    4) Live gold price with timestamp (credibility + audit trail)

A dedicated card shows the Current Gold Price per gram and the last updated timestamp. That timestamp is important: it gives your quote credibility and protects the shop when prices move.

    5) Full calculation breakdown (staff training + customer trust)

When a value is generated, the tool reveals a Calculation section that shows:

    • the base equation with real numbers plugged in
    • the markdown amount (if applied)
    • the final buy price

So if a customer questions the offer, the jeweler can point to the exact math instead of "because that's what we pay."
